The Visual Effects and It’s Role in the Interaction of Light with Material

Abstract

In most interior spaces, light plays a crucial role. When light falls on a material, it undergoes reflection, refraction, absorption, or penetration, depending on the material’s properties. As a result, we perceive the form due to differences and variations in the visible field. These variations in perception are linked to the intensity of illumination on the surface of each material within the space.
 
Since light is one of the most significant factors affecting materials, it influences the shape of the space and the atmosphere intended to be created within it. For example, rough materials evoke a sense of antiquity and a return to nature, whereas smooth surfaces convey modernity and futurism.
 
The surfaces of materials, ranging from smooth to rough, receive light at specific angles and diffuse it into the space at varying angles depending on the material. This variation affects the nature of dispersed light within the space from one surface to another. This process is determined by the reflection coefficient of each material, and understanding this coefficient allows designers to create a harmonious atmosphere within the space.
 
Therefore, when designing a space, the designer must consider the different textures of materials and their relationship with light to ensure the space remains comfortable for users and retains its distinctive character.
 
Interior architecture consists of a combination of elements, including materials, form, and light. Light and shadow form an interconnected pattern, and manipulating them helps produce an artistic architectural composition rich in distinctive and intricate details. Light and shadow can make an interior or architectural design more dynamic and visually appealing, as they play a significant role in human psychology.
Shadow is defined as the darkness or obscurity resulting from an object blocking light, while light is the natural illumination emitted by the sun and moon. Meanwhile, brightness is direct light obtained from an artificial light source, which is electromagnetic radiation acquired from another object.
